A Lush Day at the Spa

July 28, 2008

Last week, due to the generosity of my aunt (a.k.a shopping-partner and fellow-connoisseur-of-all-things beautiful), I became the recipient of a lush spa afternoon @ Spa Botanica, located on the little island of Sentosa.

The spa which has been voted by Conde Nast Traveller UK as “THE WORLD’S TOP 10 URBAN DAY SPA,” Spa Botanica is a haven for luxury and elegance.

After a convenient shuttle of about 15-minutes from Paragon in the city, we arrived at a medium-sized old colonial bungalow estate which housed the spa. We proceeded to “check-in” at the reception where we were promptly served tea as we filled out our forms.

A few days ago, we were pouring through the spa menu wondering which treatment we were gonna go for. As with most spas, there were the a la carte selections of different types of facials, massage or beauty treatments or the many different packages. Inititally we thought of the rooibos face and body anti-ageing delight (which would have been ‘apt’ since I was moving to South Africa!) but eventually settled on the tropical glow treatment instead.

We had arrived about an hour before the treatment so as to take advantage of the pool, mud baths and other facilities but alas, it was raining :(

So we made ourselves content in the jacuzzi instead…

And got out before we became ‘prunes’ and read magazines instead…

Soon after, we were ushered for our magnificent 3-hour treatment… There were indoor and outdoor treatment areas but because of the rain, I was ‘deprived’ of my fresh air under a pavillion.

Any how… after 3 hours of a scrub, mask, facial, Vichy shower and massage, I felt distinctly more relaxed. My only ‘complain’ was that the papaya clay mask smelled funny and I’d to shower 3x (after the scrub, after the mask and then there was the Vichy shower!)!!!

Both my aunt and I agreed that we felt like our skin was refreshed after all the pampering and we left feeling rather relaxed.

My verdict: 4 out of 5 stars! The location was great, the facilities were pretty good… but could be better with more indoor activities (since rain deprived us of the use of facilities outside). The staff were attentive and lovely. I’d recommend this place to all who’d love a little getaway from the crazy busy life of Singapore!!!

Expansion of a Nation

July 22, 2008

It was a random thought that I remembered as the plane made its approach onto the runway in Singapore… but I suddenly remembered that we were probably landing on ‘reclaimed land.’

For all who are fortunate to live in spacious lands, this is probably quite a foreign concept. Anyhow I thought I’ll google it and find out how much of Singapore sits on ‘man-made’ land.

20%!!!

According to Wikipedia, Singapore has added 20% to its original size or 135km2 and plans to add another 99km2. (Information for 2003.)

AND according to a friend of mine, some little islands have literally disappeared in the process of reclamation since the country’s been extended beyond those islands!

Ok this is all random but I thought it might serve as interesting information for all who did not know ;) Ha-
